[ resource ] special unicode symbols reference chart
This is basically a large compilation of all the symbols that I think are commonly used for RP and other HTML/internet purposes. Though most have actual legitimate practical purposes, we all love using them for other things. This chart is by no means complete. If you would like a full symbol reference chart, I suggest the following the places: dnmark's special characters, unicode.org's charts, and macchiato.com's charts. As you can see, the lists are HUGE. Hence why compiling all the more commonly used symbols and letters should be helpful.
A few things to note about my charts. I have them very loosely categorized. By loose I mean three: misc symbols (like punctuation), shapes, and letters. Though within each category I try to group them by similarity, like game pieces, weather symbols, zodiac signs, mathematical symbols, languages, type, etc. It's by no means perfect, but it'll do. Also, to make it easier to tell what the symbols are, I actually have them enlarged. So for instance, by default a heart symbol looks like this: ♥. Kind of small. So to make it easier, I have both the default and a larger version. It's upped to font size 28px, so it looks like this: ♥. Lastly, I provide both the symbol that one can easily copy/paste and the actual code. So for hearts it's "♥".
Suggestion! I highly recommend using the actual code for symbols, especially if you are using the custom LJ layouts using the LJ layers technique from Starlit. At the time I'm writing this, these symbols turn into gibberish on the layouts for some weird reason. They look fine on normal DW layouts and when the style is off. But on the actual customized layouts, it's wrong. Some do work, but some others don't. (I'll edit this if this ever changes.)
Troubleshooting: The symbols don't show up on my browser! Some people may not be able to see certain symbols while others might. It could turn out gibberish or a square with numbers in it, like this: ♷ That means your computer doesn't have the proper font installed. A good place to look up how to install these (both for PCs and Macs) would be here at Unicode. For the most part, you'll have to check certain language and regional options.
If there are any symbols you'd like to see added to the charts, just comment to the post! Even if you don't know the code, I'll be able to look it up. Feel free to link this anywhere and use it at your leisure.
❖ misc symbols
These charts just include some random punctuation and a couple mathematical symbols. This also has some of the symbols that you would commonly find used in such emotes, like this one: щ(゜ロ゜щ) or this one: (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻. This is a great listing for the most commonly used emotes, and here are the symbols for all the popular elements so you can also make your own. Some of the symbols may be in one of the other charts (like letters), but otherwise there will be a few unicode symbols from the Hiragana, Katakana, and Cyrillic charts.
❖ shapes
These charts include a lot of the commonly used shape symbols that I've seen around plus a lot more that look pretty interesting and people might like. I kind of categorized them by type, and then a couple are just weird or were were a short list so I just tacked them with another category. Things like the ♥ and ★ can be found here.
❖ letters
This is what I think are the most commonly used letter symbols that people may use every now and then. The sets aren't complete—I didn't include some letter symbols that were either really similar or just didn't seem that distinctive, like Alpha and Beta for the Greek symbols. Though for those, if you wanted to be really correct you could just type Α and you would get the Alpha symbol (Α). I also didn't include other alphabets like Cyrillic and Japanese. I have those active on my computer, but I'm not sure how universal some are.
If you're looking for the upside down letters, I think I got the set that most people use. There's another set, but they were pretty much identical. I also included the ones that are fancy looking. If you would like me to include another set or alphabet, just let me know!
If you have any suggestions or symbols you'd like to be added to this list, feel free to ask!
